How far to shift
What a semitone is
The distance between two adjacent piano keys, counting black and white. Twelve semitones make an octave.
±1 semitone
A minimal tweak to match a slightly out-of-tune instrument or gain a little comfort when singing.
±2 semitones
The most common vocal adjustment: noticeable in comfort, while the song still sounds very similar.
±3 to ±5 semitones
Bigger changes, useful for moving a song written for a low voice to a high one, or the reverse.
±7 semitones
A fifth: the song changes color quite a bit, though the new key is still closely related to the original.
±12 semitones
A full octave. The key is the same, just everything sounds higher or lower.
Tips for better results
- Use the smallest shift that solves your problem: the smaller the change, the more natural it sounds.
- Start from a good-quality file; the flaws of a heavily compressed MP3 show more when shifting pitch.
- If you need a very large change, try a full octave: it often sounds more natural than 8 or 10 semitones.
- Before downloading, listen to the song's highest or lowest note to confirm the new key works for you.
Frequently asked questions
Does the speed change when I change the pitch?
No. Tempo and length stay exactly the same; only the pitch of the notes changes. To speed up or slow down without touching the pitch, use Tempo Changer.
How many semitones can I shift?
From -12 to +12, one octave down or up, in one-semitone steps.
Does it change the song's key?
Yes, each semitone moves it one step on the chromatic scale. A song in E raised two semitones ends up in F sharp.
Does it affect sound quality?
With small changes, one to three semitones, it sounds very natural. From six or seven on, artifacts and a slightly metallic tone can appear, especially on vocals.
