The perfect cover
Always square
Players expect a 1:1 ratio. With the «Square» option the image is cropped to the center, as you see in the preview.
1000 × 1000 pixels
The recommended size: sharp on large screens without bloating the file.
Maximum size
Keep the original image or cap it at 500, 1000 or 1400 pixels so it isn't heavier than needed.
JPG for photos
Ideal for photographic covers: good quality at a small size.
PNG for graphics
Better when the cover has text, logos or very sharp edges.
Tips for better results
- If you're digitizing your records, scan the original cover: you'll get the most faithful image.
- Use the same image on every track of an album so the player shows them as a set.
- The cover adds some weight to the file; with a 1000 × 1000 JPG the increase is small.
- If you also want to fix artist, album or title, use Metadata Editor.
Frequently asked questions
Does my FLAC lose quality when adding a cover?
No. The audio is copied without re-encoding, so it stays bit-for-bit identical. Only the metadata area where the image is stored changes.
Which image formats can I use?
JPG and PNG. We recommend a square image of about 1000 × 1000 pixels.
How do I extract the cover from a FLAC?
Upload the file, choose «Extract» and download the image as PNG. Your FLAC isn't modified.
Will the cover show in any player?
The cover is stored in FLAC's standard picture block, which most desktop players, media servers and music apps read.
What if my music is MP3?
Use Metadata Editor, which also adds covers to MP3s and lets you fix the rest of the tags.
