What is the Evaporator?

It's what happens when you give a time-stretching algorithm too much power and no adult supervision. It takes any audio — a pop song, a symphony, a podcast, your neighbour's lawnmower — and slows it to as little as 1% of its speed while keeping the pitch intact. The result is a vast, shimmering soundscape that barely resembles the source: a snare hit becomes rolling thunder; a vocal harmony, a choir of ancient gods humming in a cave the size of a moon.

How to evaporate a song

The dissolution scale

  • 75–90% · The hazeStill recognisable, but it sounds as if you're hearing it from the next room through a wall of warm honey.
  • 50% · The meltHalf speed. Vocals stretch into long sighs and drums drift away. This is where many people realise they've made something beautiful by accident.
  • 25% · The driftThe song is now a ghost. Notes hang in the air for seconds and chord changes move like weather fronts.
  • 10% · The abyssOne minute becomes ten. It no longer sounds like music: it sounds like a dying star's hum filtered through a crystal cathedral. And, against all odds, it's very listenable.
  • 1–5% · Geological timeNotes last so long they become places. A guitar chord is a landscape; a cymbal crash, a weather event. To get here, use a short clip: results can last up to 10 minutes (6 seconds at 1%).

Why does this exist?

  • Ambient musicSeriously: it's one of ambient production's best-kept secrets. A song with interesting harmonics at 5–25% gives you material that would take hours to build from scratch.
  • Sound designNeed an eerie drone for a short film, podcast or game? Evaporate a piano recording at 10%. The harmonics are real, which synths struggle to fake.
  • Meditation and sleepAt 10–25% it makes excellent background audio for meditation, sleep or focus: a sound bath made from the song you love most.
  • Because you canWe wanted to know what a pop song sounds like at 1%. The answer: like the cosmos dreaming. Now you can find out too.

The science of extreme stretching

The usual way to slow audio down is to play samples more slowly, which lowers the pitch (think of a record at the wrong speed). The Evaporator uses Paulstretch: it slices the audio into windows, keeps the strength of each frequency, gives each one a random phase and joins the windows back together, further apart in time. The pitch doesn't change because the frequencies don't move.

At moderate speeds it sounds transparent. At extreme speeds the algorithm has to fill so much space that it invents new timbres: those shimmering, grainy artefacts aren't flaws, they are the whole aesthetic. Everything is computed on your device.

What does it actually do?

It slows any audio down to 1% of its speed without changing the pitch. Vocals, instruments and harmonics are kept, stretched into glacial soundscapes.

How long will the result be?

Original length divided by the percentage: a 4-minute song at 50% lasts 8. So your browser can cope, results are capped at 10 minutes: for very low speeds, use a short clip (1 minute at 10%, 6 seconds at 1%).

Is it the same as Slowed + Reverb?

No. Slowed + Reverb also lowers the pitch and adds reverb. The Evaporator keeps the pitch, adds no effects and goes to far more extreme speeds.

Why doesn't the preview go below 6%?

It's the browser's playback-speed limit. The file you download is stretched to the exact speed you choose.

Is it free? Is my audio uploaded?

Free and unlimited. The audio is processed on your device and never sent to a server.

Can I use what I make?
