How to convert M4A to MP3 (iPhone voice memos to MP3)

What is an M4A file?
M4A is an MPEG-4 container that almost always holds AAC audio, the codec Apple uses for voice memos, iTunes and many recording apps. AAC is more efficient than MP3: at the same size it sounds a bit better. The issue isn't quality, it's compatibility.
Why convert it to MP3?
- Universal compatibility: older car stereos, speakers, photo frames and some editors can't open M4A.
- Platforms and forms: many sites (sign-ups, castings, podcast hosts) only accept MP3.
- Share without surprises: an MP3 plays the same on Windows, Android and any browser.
How to convert M4A to MP3 step by step
- Get the file onto your computer or open it on your phone. On iPhone, in Voice Memos: Share → Save to Files.
- Open the converter and choose the file. You'll see its source format and a preview to listen to.
- Choose MP3 and the quality. 128 kbps for speech, 192 kbps for general use and 256–320 kbps for music.
- Convert and download. The file keeps its original name with the .mp3 extension.
Do you lose quality?
Technically yes: going from one lossy format (AAC) to another (MP3) compresses again. In practice, at 192 kbps or more you won't hear it on speech and barely on music. What conversion never does is improve the original: if a voice memo is noisy, convert it and then run it through the noise remover.

Common mistakes
- Raising quality above the source. A 64 kbps AAC voice memo gains nothing at 320 kbps MP3: it just gets bigger.
- Converting repeatedly. Every lossy conversion takes a little away. Keep the original M4A.
- Confusing M4A with M4P or M4B. M4P are old copy-protected iTunes songs; M4B, audiobooks with chapters.
